Dear Parents,
This book invites us to discover the magical transformation that tiny olives undergo before becoming pure, clear oil. At each stage of this journey, the grandmother and her granddaughter guide us through a shared, movement-based activity: patting the compost bag, tapping our hands on the clouds, and shaking the tree’s branches…
This interactive story engages children in a sensory experience that sparks their imagination and helps them feel like active participants in the rituals—not just observers. Through the warm and loving bond between grandmother and granddaughter, children experience a deep sense of belonging, and bridges of affection are built across generations.
At the age of 3–4, children begin forming the first features of their self-identity. They start to see themselves as independent beings with their own traits and personal interests. When we give them a chance to take part in a traditional, collective ritual—such as making olive oil—we nurture their need for initiative and their growing sense of agency.
At the same time, the foundations of collective identity begin to take shape. Children start asking themselves: “Who am I in this community? What story do I belong to?” Participating in a communal ritual—like wearing embroidered clothing or listening to grandparents’ stories—offers the child a warm feeling of belonging to a community rooted deeply in history, a community that resembles them, embraces them, and gives them a meaningful place within its living fabric.
This story opens pathways to connect cultural values with educational goals. It transforms heritage from a memory into a living daily practice, and nurtures in the child a sense of belonging and pride in their cultural identity.
Let’s Talk
· Discuss with children the benefits of the olive tree and its essential role in our lives.
· Explore the tradition of olive picking and talk about its symbolic meaning and the group activities associated with it.
Let’s Enrich Our Language
· Describe the stages of olive-oil production with your child, using accurate action words such as: pick, pound, press, taste, etc. These words enrich vocabulary and support expressive, descriptive language.
Let’s Strengthen Our Identity
· Look at old photos of grandparents and talk about life in the past: clothing, homes, crafts, and tools.
· Draw your child’s family tree together and talk about each family member—their traits, hobbies, and interests.
· Explore pieces of traditional embroidery, observe their colors and symbols, and connect them to cultural identity.
Let’s Explore and Discover
· Visit an olive press or watch a short video about one, then talk about the machines and different stages of production.
· Learn about medicinal plants that are used to extract oils; touch and smell them to help children build sensory awareness.
Let’s Create
· Make a thank-you card for the olive tree. Draw olive products and decorate them with traditional patterns and olive leaves.
The text starts with a poem about our home town. We can talk with our child about our town’s characteristics, and switch the last sentence with a one that relates to our town.
Who are our neighbors? We can talk with our child about the nearby villages and towns that he visits sometimes and see what connections he makes to each one.
The illustrations highlight the most prominent spots in each town and village. We can help our child to identify these spots through the illustrations such as the Dome of Bahai or the light house of Akko.
Does the book motivate us to go on a journey to different places? It would be nice to go and take family pictures and then hang them on the string in the last two pages of this book. We can also collect all the pictures in a small memory box.
