ILoveApplesToo

By: Inass Hadhoud Wawi • Illustrations: Charlotte Shama

This book is the result of the literary workshop at Maktabat al-Fanoos, with generous support from the Allison & Robert Price Family Foundation.

Age Group: The kindergarten

Dear Parents,

Have we ever wondered what our child does when facing a difficulty? Sugar wants to fill her basket with apples like the other kangaroos, but her shorter left leg prevents her from jumping high. This makes her sad and creates challenges she has to face. However, with the help of her bird friend, and through her willpower and determination, Sugar succeeds in getting lots of apples.

This book helps us see each child’s abilities in the family and their different needs that might pose small or large challenges and difficulties. How does our child deal with these difficulties? Do they give up and withdraw, or do they try and persist like Sugar? When we encourage our child and praise their attempts and persistence, regardless of the final result, we motivate them and charge them with a feeling of strength. For example, we can say: I liked how you tried and didn’t give up, we are proud of you for your persistence.

We can talk with our child about the idea that each of us is a special person, with different skills and abilities, things we are good at and others we need help with. And we can remember and remind children with special needs that they have their own distinctive qualities and strengths.
